Sisterhood: A Triad of Political Practice

A reading with María do Mar Castro Varela and Bahar Oghalai

Followed by a discussion

Justice is the goal, but with whom is it to be achieved?

This question is by no means a peripheral one, standing alongside the supposedly central political debates.

Rather, it is an explicitly political issue that lies at the heart of every social movement.

It is worth reflecting here on a different concept of political practice:

Friendship between women, usually relegated to the private sphere and banished from the political arena.

Yet friendships between women are genuinely political relationships whose fundamental characteristics transform our view of the world.

In times of multiple crises and growing global injustices, this essay examines existing theories of female friendship with a view to making them productive for a conception of female friendship as political practice.

2026-11-06
