In Spain, the forced eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen sparked a wave of mass demonstrations against the housing crisis.<\/p>\n
The pressure on the streets forced the Spanish government to call a snap election.<\/p>\n
The trade unions called for a general strike on 11 November.<\/p>\n
In Berlin, too, the housing crisis is a key issue \u2014 even though the Berlin rent movement already secured a historic victory in 2021 with the successful referendum \u2018Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen & Co\u2019.<\/p>\n
In the most recent election campaign, too, Die Linke won the most votes in Berlin with its plans to nationalise housing corporations.<\/p>\n
Yet just a few days after its election victory, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) announced that he wanted to have expropriations banned by law at federal level.<\/p>\n
How is it that the rent movement in Germany is growing ever weaker, whilst in Spain a powerful wave of protest has emerged within a matter of weeks? What can we learn from the successes in Spain, but also from our own history of protest?<\/p>\n
